Rainbow Science
Outcomes
Description
Rainbow Science is a science communication initiative that highlights the stories and experiences of GFZ LGBTQIA+ scientists, celebrating diversity and inclusion within the scientific community. It was sponsored by GFZ and IAGA (International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy). Through in-depth interviews, early-career scientists share both their research and personal journeys, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities faced by minority groups in academia.
By combining scientific discussion with lived experience, the project emphasizes the importance of representation, visibility, and inclusive environments in science. Rainbow Science aims to amplify underrepresented voices, inspire dialogue, and encourage a more open, welcoming, and diverse future for research and education.
My Role
I led the project’s concept development, interview design, and audiovisual production. My role included preparing and conducting the interviews, creating a safe and respectful space for participants to share their stories, and shaping the narrative to balance scientific content with personal perspectives. I was also responsible for filming, editing, and the overall storytelling approach to ensure the videos were engaging, authentic, and impactful.
Results
- Video interviews (total 69 minutes)
The project resulted in interviews with seven researchers and staff members from GFZ, representing different nationalities and career stages. Together, these interviews offer a broad and nuanced view of diversity within the scientific workplace.
