Geocience Connections
Outcomes
Description
Geoscience Connections is an international science communication project supported by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) to connect its eight scientific Associations through interviews with senior and early-career scientists. The project covered a broad range of geoscience topics, from the deep Earth to space, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinarity, diversity, inclusion, and sustainable development.
My Role
I served as the project organiser and lead communicator, responsible for concept development, coordination, filming, editing, animation direction, and overall audiovisual production. The project significantly strengthened my expertise in international science communication and confirmed my career focus on science outreach.
Results
- Video interviews
- Animated movie
- Documentary
- Web-series
The project resulted in four main outputs:
(1) 43 short interview videos with early-career and senior researchers filmed in France, Germany, and the Czech Republic;
(2) an award-winning 6-minute animation, Earth–Human Connections (sponsored by IUGG and IAGA, 2023), for which I was screenplay writer and director. The film won the Public Award at the Braga Film Fest, was selected for the Science Film Festival, and was nominated for the Silbersalz Science & Media Awards (Short & Crisp category);
(3) a 30-minute documentary featuring one early-career scientist from each IUGG Association; and
(4) a web series of interviews with IUGG and Association leadership.
All materials were disseminated through IUGG and its Association’s social media channels. Subtitles in English ensured accessibility, and young female scientists were prioritised to encourage women in geosciences.
